3-Day Class Description
* Each day opens with a classroom talk/discussion at
the Columbia Gorge Kayak School.
Day 1
Classroom Topic: Boat design—Adjustment—“Gear”
Talk
The first day is designed to familiarize the students
with their kayak equipment. Students will be working
on balance and paddle techniques, T-rescues and rolling,
as well as playing a variety of games that are specific
to these paddling techniques. Friendly competitions
will be organized throughout the day, focusing on team
work and skills, as well as having fun. A visit to the
local AT paddle shop will definitely be one of the highlights
of the day. . . the kids get to choose their own paddle
to use during the class!
Day 2
Classroom Topic: River Classification—River Terms
& Safety
The second day will be the first experience on the river.
Focus is on river safety, river T-rescues and rolling,
entering and exiting eddies, river reading, swimming
through rapids and scouting. Video will be taken throughout
the day and be reviewed at the end of the day. Location:
Klickitat River.
Day 3
Classroom Topic: Video Reviewing
We will continue learning and reviewing river techniques
on the Klickitat River. Parents will have the option
to raft down a stretch of the river to observe their
child. The weekend will be wrapped up with a Grand Finale
Family/Friend picnic.
