The Weekender class is for beginning paddlers
looking for an intensive two-day course starting in
the pool and ending on the Klickitat River. The months that this class will take place are March through October.
On Saturday class starts in the pool where students
are introduced to kayaking by learning wet exits, controlling
the boat on edge and trying the Eskimo Roll. After lunch
a class resumes and students learn a variety of strokes
and the fundamentals of boat control in moving water,
paddling in a straight line, eddy turns and peel outs.
Students will focus on river safety and river preparation
for the following day.
On Sunday students will apply the boating concepts
of the previous day while paddling five miles on the
Klickitat River in Class II whitewater. Students will
practice reading whitewater and river safety, scouting
and running rapids, and maneuvering in and out of eddies.
Slow, deep pools in between rapids will provide the
opportunity for students to practice the roll and perform
rescues. Lunch is provided.
The Weekender is the most intensive class for beginners
and is not recommended for everybody. Students who are
afraid of water or desire more practice in the pool
or on the lake before going to the river should consider
the Three Week Pool Class before moving onto a river
class.
